The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 1972.  The courthouse is on Court Street at Main Street.  United States Highway 15 Business is one block to the northwest of the site.  Johnson, Craven & Gibson are the architects.  A 1928 District Courthouse and an 1876 Administration Building (former hotel) support the county courthouse.  Fauquier County was created on May 1, 1759 from Prince William County as the 46th county with Warrenton as the only county seat.  There was an 1890 structure earlier.  The county is named for Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier.  The county seat is named for American Revolutionary War hero Doctor Joseph Warren.  He is also the namesake for Warren County. 

Fauquier County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Fauquier, Loudoun, and Rappahannock counties and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Fauquier, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities.  The county is in northern Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is east and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is in Warrenton 1.5 miles North of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, Culpeper, Rappahannock, Warren, and Clarke counties. 

The area of the county is 650 square miles.  It is 8 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 29 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 112.2 persons per square mile making it 63 out of 133 in the state.  Fauquier County has 15.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 66 passes east to west in the county from Prince William County to Warren County.  United States Highways 15/29 enter from Prince William County, east, and exit into Culpeper County, south.  United States Highway 17 comes from the northwest, Clarke County, and goes to the southeast, Stafford County.  United States Highway 50 enters from Loudoun County, northeast, and joins United States Highway 17 into Clarke County, northwest.  United States Highway 211 originates and heads southwest into Culpeper County.  The county is shaped like the State of California.  Warrenton is located near the center of the county.  Warrenton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 13.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced FA-KOY.  This county is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
