The red brick Art Deco courthouse was erected in 1951. There were 1834 and 1851 structures earlier in Floyd, the only county seat. The facility is at the intersection of Main and Locust streets. United States Highway 221 is Main Street in this part of the town. J. L. Williams provided the building designs. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House. Some counties maintain this in their official name. The county was formed on January 15, 1831 from Montgomery County as the 82nd county. Floyd County and its county seat are named for Governor John Floyd.
Floyd County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors. Six Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Floyd, Bland, Carroll, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Wythe counties and Galax and Radford cities and Fifty-three Magistrate Court Judges serve Floyd, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties and Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford cities. The county is in western Virginia. Roanoke, Virginia is northwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is east of the county. The county center is 1.9 miles North-Northwest of Floyd. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montgomery, Roanoke, Franklin, Patrick, Carroll, and Pulaski counties.
The area of the county is 382 square miles. It is 49 out of 133 in the state. It ranks 95 out of 133 in population in the state. It has a density of 40.5 persons per square mile making it 108 out of 133 in the state. Floyd County has 2.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 221 comes into the county from Roanoke County, northeast, and goes into Carroll County, southwest. The county looks like a funnel pointing northeast. The City of Floyd is located in the eastern third of the county. Floyd is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 2.9% of the county population.
