A 2015 Modern brick courthouse replaced a classier courthouse built in 1851.  The courthouse is on Princess Anne Street at Charlotte Street.  Moseley Architects and Glave & Holmes Architecture combined on the designs.  United States Highway 1 is Princess Anne Street.  The structure features a tower and metal roofing.  The City of Fredericksburg was created on January 1, 1789 from Spotsylvania County as the 67th county equivalent.  There was a 1740 courthouse also.  The city is named for Frederick, Prince of Wales.  He is also the namesake for Frederick County.  Fredericksburg City is the birthplace to 2 Virginia Governors, Robert Brooke and John M. Patton. 

The area of the city is 11 square miles.  It is 115 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 68 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2207.82 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 133 in the state.  Fredericksburg has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 95 travels north to south through the city from Stafford County to Spotsylvania County.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Stafford to Spotsylvania counties.  United States Highway 17 is joined with Interstate Highway 95 from Stafford County to Spotsylvania County.  The city resembles a carnival horse. 

Fredericksburg City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Eight Circuit Court Judges and Fifteen District Court Judges serve Fredericksburg City and Caroline, Essex, Hanover, King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Fredericksburg City and Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  Fredericksburg City is in northeast Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is north and Richmond, Virginia is south of the city.  The city center is in Fredericksburg 2 miles West of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.  This city is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
