The red brick Modern courthouse was erected in 1987.  The architect is unknown.  It is located on Main Street between Washington and Webster streets.  Virginia State Highway 89 is Main Street.  It features columns.  The city was formed on December 6, 1953 from parts of Carroll and Grayson counties as the 121st county equivalent.  The City of Galax is named for a local shrub. 

The area of the city is 8 square miles.  It is 125 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 123 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 840.6 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 133 in the state.  Galax has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  United States Highways 58/221 pass through the city from northeast to southwest from Carroll County to Grayson County.  The city looks like a bouquet of flowers. 

Galax City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Galax City and Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Wythe counties and Radford City and Fifty-three Magistrate Court Judges serve Galax City and Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties and Bristol, Norton, and Radford cities.  The city is in the southwest part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is northeast and Knoxville, Tennessee is southwest of the city.  The city center is in Galax 1.1 miles East-Northeast of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Carroll and Grayson counties.
