The Modern red brick structure was built in 2002.  There were 1776 and 1982 facilities before in Gloucester, the only county seat.  The courthouse is on Justice Drive and Main Street.  United States Highway 17 Business is Main Street in the town.  Wiley and Wilson are the architects.  It features columns.  Veteran memorials are in a nearby city circle.  The 1982 courthouse continues to support with administrative offices.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was founded on January 1, 1651 as the 8th county.  Gloucester County and its county seat are named for the Duke of Gloucester.  Gloucester County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, John Page. 

Gloucester County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Gloucester, Charles City, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Gloucester, Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is in the eastern part of Virginia.  The Chesapeake Bay forms its southeast border.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is southwest of the county.  The county center is in Gloucester 2.6 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Middlesex, Mathews, Northampton, York, and King and Queen counties. 

The area of the county is 288 square miles.  It is 74 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 45 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 127.98 persons per square mile making it 56 out of 133 in the state.  Gloucester County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highway 17 passes north to south through the county from Middlesex County to York County.  The county resembles a scoop pointing southeast.  The City of Gloucester is located near the center of the county.  Gloucester Point is on the southern border of the county.  Gloucester is the county seat and Gloucester Point is the largest populated area.  Gloucester is 8.0% of the county population while Gloucester Point is 25.5% of the county population.  The county, county seat, and largest city are pronounced GLA-STER.  This county is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
