The 1826 Greek Revival courthouse was remodeled in 1966. It is on River Road at Courthouse Way. River Road is United States Highway 522 in the town. Dabney Cosby is the architect of the red brick facility. The building was enlarged in 1955 and 1990. A former high school was remodeled in 2005 to serve as the county Administration Building. Many supporting buildings are in the complex. Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House. Some counties maintain this in their official name. The county was established on January 1, 1728 from Henrico County as the 26th county and Goochland has always been the county seat. The county and county seat were named for British Lieutenant Governor William Gooch. Goochland County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Thomas M. Randolph, Jr.

Three Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Goochland, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties and Charlottesville City and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Goochland, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities. The county is in the center of the state. Richmond, Virginia is southeast and Roanoke, Virginia is southwest of the county. The county center is 4.4 miles Northwest of Goochland nearer Sandy Hook. The county is surrounded clockwise by Louisa, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan, Cumberland, and Fluvanna counties.
