The 1838 Roman Temple courthouse was updated in 1928.  It is located on Court Street at Ford Avenue.  United States Highway 33 Business passes one block north of the courthouse.  William Donoho and William B. Phillips provided the red brick designs.  It features a tower and columns.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  An Administration Building was added in 1982.  Greene County was formed on March 30, 1838 from Orange County as the 88th county and Standardsville has always been the county seat.  It was named for American Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene.  The county seat is named for settler Robert Standards. 

Greene County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Greene, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties and Charlottesville City and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Greene, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities.  The county is in the northern part of Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is southeast and Alexandria, Virginia is northeast of the county.  The county center is .6 miles Northwest of Stanardsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Madison, Orange, Albemarle, Rockingham, and Page counties. 

The area of the county is 157 square miles.  It is 97 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 83 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 117.22 persons per square mile making it 60 out of 133 in the state.  Greene County has 2.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 29 goes north to south from Madison County to Albemarle County.  United States Highway 33 enters from Orange County, southeast, and exits into Rockingham County, northwest.  The county is shaped like the State of Idaho.  Stanardsville is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Stanardsville is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 2.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
