The Classical Revival white brick courthouse was built in 1876.  The courthouse is on Kings Way between Queens Way and Lincoln Street.  United States Highway 60 is two blocks south of the site.  Charles Taylor Holtzclaw is the architect.  The building was remodeled in 1910 and enlarged in 1962 and 1972.  A Modern courthouse was completed in 2016 using the designs of MMM Design Group.  The city was established on March 30, 1908 from Elizabeth City County as the 112th county equivalent with 1699 and 1714 courthouses in Hampton.  The city center is in Hampton 1.6 miles Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by the City of Poquoson and Northampton County and the Atlantic Ocean and Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News cities and York County. 

Hampton City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Hampton City and Thirty-four Magistrate Court Judges serve Hampton City and Isle of Wight and Southampton counties and Chesapeake, Franklin, Newport News, and Suffolk cities.  The City of Hampton is named for the Earl of Southampton. 

The area of the city is 136 square miles.  It is 98 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 13 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1010.56 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 133 in the state.  Hampton has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 64 passes east to west through the city from the City of Norfolk to the City of Newport News.  Interstate Highway 664 originates and heads south into the City of Newport News.  United States Highway 17 enters joined with Interstate Highway 64 from Newport News City, splits and heads southwest back into Newport News City.  United States Highway 60 is joined with Interstate Highway 64 from Norfolk to Newport News cities.  United States Highway 258 originates and joins United States Highway 17 southwest into Newport News City.  The city resembles a boot.  This city is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
