The new Modern stone building was constructed in 2015.  It is at the intersection of Main and Ash streets.  The building designer is unknown.  Main Street is United States Highway 11 in the town.  The City of Harrisonburg was formed on January 1, 1916 from Rockingham County as the 114th county equivalent.  It is named for settler Thomas Harrison.  He is also the source for the county seat of Rockingham County. 

Harrisonburg City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 4 Council Members.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Eleven District Court Judges serve Harrisonburg City and Clarke, Frederick, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Winchester City and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Harrisonburg City and Clarke, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville and Winchester cities.  The city is in the western part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is southwest and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the city.  The city center is in Harrisonburg 1.2 miles South of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Rockingham County. 

The area of the city is 18 square miles.  It is 110 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 36 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2717.44 persons per square mile making it 10 out of 133 in the state.  Harrisonburg has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 81 goes northeast to southwest through the city in from and out to Rockingham County.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81.  United States Highway 33 crosses east to west in and out of Rockingham County.  The city is shaped like a torch.  This city is in the Harrisonburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
