The tan brick Modern building was built in 1974.  There was an 1896 courthouse in Richmond.  The courthouse is on Hungary Spring Road at Parham Road.  United States Highway 33 is two blocks to the east of the facility.  Vincent G. Kling & Partners and Carneal & Johnston combined on the designs.  It sits in a complex area of government buildings.  Varnia (1635), Richmond (1752), and Laurel (1974) have all been the county seat.  There is a 1977 Administration Building supporting the courthouse.  The county was organized on January 1, 1634 as an original county (3rd county).  It is named for Henricus, England.  Laurel is presumably named for local vegetation.  Henrico County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Beverley Randolph. 

Henrico County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Ten District Court Judges serve Henrico County and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Henrico, Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is in eastern Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is north and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 17.6 miles Southeast of Laurel nearer Highland Springs.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hanover, New Kent, Charles City, and Chesterfield counties and the City of Richmond and Goochland County. 

The area of the county is 238 square miles.  It is 81 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 6 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1405.0 persons per square mile making it 31 out of 133 in the state.  Henrico County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 64 crosses the county from southeast to northwest from New Kent County to Goochland County.  Interstate Highway 95 enters from the north, Hanover County, and exits to the south, the City of Richmond.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Hanover County to Richmond City.  United States Highway 33 enters from Hanover County and terminates.  United States Highway 60 comes in from New Kent County and goes to Richmond City.  United States Highway 301 enters from Hanover County, north, and joins United States Highway 1 into Richmond City.  United States Highway 360 passes from Hanover County to Richmond City.  The county is shaped like a capital letter C lying on its face.  Laurel is located in the northern half of the county.  Tuckahoe is in the western third of the county.  Laurel is county seat and Tuckahoe is the largest populated area.  Laurel is 5.3% of the county population while Tuckahoe is 13.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
