The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 2000.  The courthouse is shared with the City of Williamsburg.  It is on Monticello Avenue at Ironbound Road.  Monticello Avenue is Virginia State Highway 321.  Jorge L. Hernandez and Francis Lyn are the architects.  The building was renovated in 2009.  The county was formed on July 1, 1619 as an original county (1st county.)  Jamestown was the first county seat until 1715 when Williamsburg became the county seat.  James City County is named for the James River.  There were 1770 and 1969 courthouses.  The county seat is named for King William III.  He is also the namesake of the City of Williamsburg, King William County and its county seat. 

James City County government consists of a Police Chief and 5 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve James City and Charles City, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve James City and Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  James City County is in the east part of the state.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is northwest of the county.  The county center is 4.9 miles Northwest of Williamsburg nearer Burton Woods.  The county is surrounded clockwise by York County and the City of Newport News and Isle of Wight, Surry, Charles City, New Kent, King and Queen, and Gloucester counties and surrounds the City of Williamsburg. 

The area of the county is 180 square miles.  It is 95 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 28 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 372.27 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 133 in the state.  James City County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there aren’t any incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 64 enters the county from the City of Newport News, southeast, and exits into York County, northwest.  United States Highway 60 parallels Interstate Highway 64 from Newport News City to York County.  The county is a capital letter J lying on it head and pointing northwest.  Williamsburg is located near the center of the county although technically not located in the county.  Toano is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Williamsburg is the county seat and Toano is the largest populated area.  Toano is 2.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
