The Modern red brick structure was constructed in 1997 to replace the 1867 courthouse.  It is sited on Allen Circle at Court House Landing.  Virginia State Highway 14 is north in this small community.  Mosley, Harris & McClintock are the architects.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was established on January 1, 1691 from New Kent County as the 16th county with King and Queen as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for King William and Queen Mary.  King and Queen County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, John G. Pollard. 

King and Queen County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve King and Queen, Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve King and Queen, Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is in eastern Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is southwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.8 miles North-Northwest of King and Queen nearer Stevensville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Essex, Middlesex, Gloucester, James City, New Kent, King William, and Carolina counties. 

The area of the county is 316 square miles.  It is 65 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 125 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 20.9 persons per square mile making it 129 out of 133 in the state.  King and Queen County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highway 360 cuts the northwest part of the county from northeast to southwest from Essex County to King William County.  The county resembles a caterpillar crawling northwest.  The City of King and Queen is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  King and Queen is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 1.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
