The columned red brick Classical Revival facility was erected in 1923 on Courthouse Drive at Kings Highway.  Kings Highway is Virginia State Highway 3 in this community.  E. G. Heflin designed the courthouse.  The structure was remodeled in 1960 and enlarged in 1973.  Veteran memorials and a military gun are on the grounds.  An Administration Building was added in 1976.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was founded on January 1, 1720 from Richmond County as the 23rd county with King George as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for King George I.  King George County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, William Smith. 

King George County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Eight Circuit Court Judges and Fifteen District Court Judges serve King George, Caroline, Essex, Hanover, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties and Fredericksburg City and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve King George, Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is located on the northeast border with Maryland.  The Potomac River forms its northern border.  Alexandria, Virginia is northwest and Richmond, Virginia is southwest of the county.  The county center is 2.5 miles East of King George in Edgehill.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Maryland and Westmoreland, Essex, Caroline, and Stafford counties. 

The area of the county is 180 square miles.  It is 90 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 66 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 148.5 persons per square mile making it 57 out of 133 in the state.  King George County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there aren’t any incorporated cities.  United States Highway 301 crosses the county from north to south from Maryland to Caroline County.  James Madison, the 4th President, was born in this county.  The county is shaped like a bag of marbles.  The City of King George is located near the center of the county.  King George is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 18.4% of the county population.
