The red brick 1725 Georgian courthouse sits on Courthouse Road at Horse Landing Road.  Virginia State Highway 30 passes one block to the southwest.  The building was enlarged in 1840.  Veteran memorials and a brick fence are on the grounds.  An Administration Building was added in 1978.  The building designer is unknown.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was organized on January 1, 1702 from King and Queen County as the 19th county with King William as the only county seat.  King William County and its county seat are named for William of Orange.  He is also the namesake of the City of Williamsburg and the county seat of James City County. 

King William County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve King William, Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King and Queen, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve King William, Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  King William County is in eastern Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is southwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.2 miles West of King William nearer Rumford.  The county is surrounded clockwise by King and Queen, New Kent, Hanover, and Caroline counties. 

The area of the county is 275 square miles.  It is 73 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 85 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 64.8 persons per square mile making it 88 out of 133 in the state.  King William County has 19.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 360 enters the county from the northeast, King and Queen County, and exits to the southwest, Hanover County.  The county shape looks like a pencil.  The City of King William is located near the center of the county.  West Point is on the southeast tip of the county.  King William is the county seat and West Point is the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  King William is 1.4% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  West Point is 19.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
