The Modern red brick courthouse was built in 2010 to replace the 1860 structure.  The facility is on Mary Ball Road at Courthouse Road in this small community.  Virginia State Highway 3 is Mary Ball Road in the town.  Wiley and Wilson are building architects.  The structure sits in a complex of government buildings.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  Lancaster County was created on January 1, 1651 from Northumberland and York counties as the 9th county.  Queenstown and Lancaster have served as the county seat.  The county and its county seat are named for Lancastershire, England. 

Lancaster County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Eight Circuit Court Judges and Fifteen District Court Judges serve Lancaster, Caroline, Essex, Hanover, King George, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties and Fredericksburg City and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Lancaster, Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is located in the eastern part of the state.  The Chesapeake Bay forms its eastern border.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4.1 miles South of Lancaster nearer Merry Point.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Northumberland, Accomack, Northampton, Middlesex, King and Queen, and Richmond counties. 

The area of the county is 231 square miles.  It is 87 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 113 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 49.31 persons per square mile making it 96 out of 133 in the state.  Lancaster County has 19.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county looks like a car driving southeast.  The City of Lancaster is located slightly north of center in the county.  Kilmarnock is on the eastern border of the county.  Lancaster is the county seat and Kilmarnock is the largest city.  Lancaster is 1.0% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  Kilmarnock is 12.6% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced KIL-MAR-NUK.
