The architect and year of construction for the brown brick courthouse are unknown.  The facility is on Washington Street between Marble and Fuller streets.  United States Highway 60 is one block south in the town.  The city was established on January 1, 1966 from Rockbridge County as the 127th county equivalent.  The city is named for Lexington, Massachusetts.  It is also the source for the county seat of Rockingham County.  Lexington City is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, John Letcher. 

Lexington City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Lexington City and Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Craig, Highland, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Lexington City and Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities.  The city is in the western part of Virginia.  Roanoke, Virginia is southwest and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the city.  The city center is in Lexington .3 miles Southeast of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Rockbridge County. 

The area of the city is 2.5 square miles.  It is 131 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 121 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 2926.8 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 133 in the state.  Lexington has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  United States Highway 11 crosses the city from northeast to southwest in from and out of Rockbridge County.  United States Highway 60 goes southeast to northwest in and out of Rockbridge County.  The county is a fist with a finger pointing east.
