The columned building was built in 1895.  The structure is on Market and King streets.  King Street is United States Highway 15 Business in this part of the town.  William C. West provided the designs.  A new Justice Center supports this structure.  The courthouse is surrounded by a rot iron fence and the tower has a working clock.  The county was founded on January 1, 1757 from Fairfax County as the 45th county with Leesburg as the only county seat.  It is named for the Earl of Loudoun. 

Loudoun County government consists of a sheriff and 8 Supervisors.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Loudoun, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Loudoun, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities.  The county is on the northern border of the state bordering Maryland.  The Potomac River forms its northern border.  Alexandria, Virginia is southeast and Baltimore, Maryland is east of the county.  The county center is 4.1 miles Southwest of Leesburg nearer Woodburn.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Maryland and Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, and Clarke counties and West Virginia. 

The area of the county is 520 square miles.  It is 19 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 4 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 809.5 persons per square mile making it 40 out of 133 in the state.  Loudoun County has 14.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 15 travels north to south from Maryland to Prince William County.  United States Highway 50 goes east to west from Fairfax County to Fauquier County.  The county resembles the State of Oregon.  Leesburg is located in the eastern quarter of the county.  Leesburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 11.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
