The stately looking Modern facility was built in 2006 on Courthouse Road at Trinity Road.  Virginia State Highway 40 is Courthouse Road in this small community.  Wiley and Wilson are the red brick building designers.  It features columns with veteran memorials on the grounds.  The 1827 courthouse preceded the new structure.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was created on May 1, 1746 from Brunswick County as the 35th county with Lunenburg as the only county seat.  Lunenburg County and its county seat are named for the Duchy of Brunswick-Lunenburg.  It is the same source as for Brunswick County. 

Lunenburg County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Lunenburg, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Prince Edward counties and Forty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Lunenburg, Appomattox, Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg cities.  The county is in southern Virginia.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is east and Richmond, Virginia is northeast of the county.  The county center is 5.2 miles Southeast of Lunenburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Nottoway, Brunswick, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, and Prince Edward counties. 

The area of the county is 432 square miles.  It is 43 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 104 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 29.89 persons per square mile making it 121 out of 133 in the state.  Lunenburg County has 23.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 360 clips the northwest part of the state from Prince Edward County to Charlotte County.  The county is an overall rectangle with a point on the top.  The City of Lunenburg is located near the center of the county.  Victoria is in the northeast quarter of the county.  Lunenburg is the county seat and Victoria is the largest city.  Lunenburg is 1.3% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  Victoria is 13.4% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced LOO-NEN-BURG.
