The year of construction for the Modern Art Deco tan brick and marble courthouse is unknown. It is located at the intersection of Court and 9th streets. United States Highway 29 passes seven blocks to the east of the site. The architect is unknown. A 2009 Juvenile Courthouse augments the county facility. The city was formed on January 1, 1852 from Campbell County as the 96th county equivalent. It is named for settler John Lynch.

Lynchburg City is in the southwest part of the state. Roanoke, Virginia is west and Richmond, Virginia is east of the city. The city center is in Lynchburg 2.7 miles West of downtown. The city is surrounded clockwise by Amherst, Campbell, and Bedford counties.

It has a density of 1612.4 persons per square mile making it 24 out of 133 in the state. Lynchburg has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits. United States Highway 29 enters the city from the northeast, Amherst County, and exits to the south, Campbell County. United States Highway 460 passes east to west in from and out to Campbell County. United States Highway 501 comes from Bedford County, northwest, and goes to Campbell County, southeast. The city resembles a laser gun pointing east. This city is in the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
