The red brick courthouse was constructed in 1830 and is located on Main Street at Court House Square.  United States Highway 29 Business is Main Street in the town.  Malcom F. Crawford is the building architect.  An Annex augments the courthouse.  The courthouse has a tower and veteran memorials are across Main Street.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  Madison County was established on December 1, 1792 as the 73rd county with Madison as the only county seat.  The county and its county seat are named for the family of future United States President James Madison.  Madison County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, James L. Kemper. 

Madison County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Madison, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, and Orange counties and Charlottesville City and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Madison, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities.  The county is in the northern part of Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is northeast and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.8 miles North of Madison nearer Haywood.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Rappahannock, Culpeper, Orange, Greene, and Page counties.  T

he area of the county is 322 square miles.  It is 67 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 103 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 41.33 persons per square mile making it 106 out of 133 in the state.  Madison County has 1.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 15 clips the eastern part of the county from Culpeper County, northeast, to Orange County, southeast.  United States Highway 29 crosses northeast to southwest from Culpeper County to Albemarle County.  The county is an overall rectangle.  The City of Madison is located in the southern third of the county.  Madison is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 1.7% of the county population.
