The designer and construction year for the modern facility are unknown.  It is located on Center Street at East Street.  Virginia State Highway 28 is Center Street in the town.  The old city hall still operates and sits next door.  The city was founded on January 1, 1975 from Prince William County as the 131st county equivalent.  Manassas City was named for the battlefield.  It is also the source for the City of Manassas Park. 

Manassas City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Four District Court Judges serve Manassas City and Prince William County and Manassas Park City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Manassas City and Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, and Manassas Park cities.  The city is in the northeast.  Alexandria, Virginia is east and Richmond, Virginia is south of the city.  The city center is in Manassas .2 miles Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by the City of Manassas Park and Prince William County. 

The area of the city is 10 square miles.  It is 119 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 41 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4277.3 persons per square mile making it 7 out of 133 in the state.  Manassas has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the city.  The city resembles a bird head pointing southwest.  The city is pronounced MA-NAS-SAS.  This city is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
