The Modern tan brick courthouse was built in 1968. The facility is on Church Street between Moss and Bridge streets. Virginia State Highway 457 is four blocks north of the site. J. Coates Carter provided the designs. The city was organized on January 1, 1928 from Henry County as the 115th county equivalent. It is named for founder Joseph Martin.

The city is located near the southern border of the state. Roanoke, Virginia is north and Richmond, Virginia is northeast of the city. The city center is in Martinsville .6 miles East-Southeast of downtown. The city is completely surrounded by Henry County.

It has a density of 1256.46 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 133 in the state. Martinsville has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits. United States Highway 58 crosses the city east to west in from and out to Henry County. United States Highway 220 goes north to south in and out of Henry County. The city is shaped like a microphone. This city is in the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
