The Modern red brick and concrete structure was built in 2012.  The county was established on October 1, 1777 from Fincastle County as the 59th county.  The courthouse sits on Main and Pepper streets.  United States Highway 11 is Main Street in the town.  Thompson & Litton provided the designs.  There have been 1865, 1909, and 1976 versions of the courthouse all of Christiansburg.  A 2002 County Complex augments the courthouse.  Montgomery County is named for American Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery.  The county seat was named for frontiersman William Christian.  Montgomery County is the birthplace to 2 Virginia Governors, James P. Preston and John B. Floyd. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Montgomery, Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Pulaski, and Wythe counties and Galax and Radford cities and Fifty-three Magistrate Court Judges serve Montgomery, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties and Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford cities.  Montgomery County is in the western part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is directly northeast and Charleston, West Virginia is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5.3 miles North of Christiansburg in Blacksburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Craig, Roanoke, Floyd, and Pulaski counties and the City of Radford and Giles County. 

The area of the county is 388 square miles.  It is 48 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 19 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 257.0 persons per square mile making it 49 out of 133 in the state.  Montgomery County has 68.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 81 passes through the county from northeast to southwest from Roanoke County to Pulaski County.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81 from Roanoke to Pulaski counties.  United States Highway 460 enters from the north, Giles County, and joins United States Highway 11 to exit to the northeast, Roanoke County.  The county is shaped like a locomotive heading southwest.  Christiansburg is located in the southern third of the county.  Blacksburg is in the northern third of the county.  Christiansburg is the county seat and Blacksburg is the largest city.  Christiansburg is 34.3% of the county population while Blacksburg is 45.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
