The Modern red brick and concrete courthouse was constructed in 1988.  It is located at the intersection of Washington Avenue at 25th Street.  Interstate Highway 664 is two blocks to the northeast of the courthouse.  Sasaki Associates are the building designers.  The 1951 courthouse still houses specialized courts.  There were also 1810 and 1885 courthouses in Newport News when it was part of Warwick County.  The city was established on January 1, 1958 from Warwick County as the 123rd county equivalent.  The city was reportedly named for the Captain of a ship returning settlers to the site. 

Newport News City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Newport News City and Thirty-four Magistrate Court Judges serve Newport News City and Isle of Wight and Southampton counties and Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, and Suffolk cities.  The city is in the southeast part of the state.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is northwest of the city.  The city center is in Newport News 5.3 miles West of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by York County and Hampton, Portsmouth, and Suffolk cities and Isle of Wight, Surry, and James City counties. 

The area of the city is 119 square miles.  It is 99 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 11 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1518.65 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 133 in the state.  Newport News has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 64 goes northwest to southeast from James City County to the City of Hampton.  Interstate Highway 664 comes from Hampton City and goes south into Suffolk City.  United States Highway 17 enters from York County, north, and goes to Isle of Wight County, southwest.  United States Highway 60 parallels Interstate Highway 64 from James City County to Hampton City.  United States Highway 258 comes in from Hampton City and joins United States Highway 17 into Isle of Wight County.  The city resembles a dragon flying southeast.  This city is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
