The red brick Roman Revival/Jeffersonian facility was constructed in 1852 at Blue Ridge Street and Main Street. United States Highway 58 is Blue Ridge Street. The building was remodeled in 1928, 1936, and 1972. The structure was enlarged in 1982. Abram Staples is the building architect. The structure has columns and veteran memorials on the grounds. Patrick County was organized on January 1, 1791 from Patrick Henry County as the 71st county with Stuart as the only county seat. It is named for Governor Patrick Henry. He is also the namesake of Henry County. The county seat was named for Civil War General Jeb Stuart. Patrick County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Gerald L. Baliles.
Patrick County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors. Three Circuit Court Judges and Three District Court Judges serve Patrick and Henry counties and Martinsville City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Patrick, Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities. The county is on the southern border with North Carolina. Roanoke, Virginia is northeast and Asheville, North Carolina is south of the county. The county center is 5 miles North-Northwest of Stuart. The county is surrounded clockwise by Franklin and Henry counties and North Carolina and Carroll and Floyd counties.
The area of the county is 483 square miles. It is 27 out of 133 in the state. It ranks 86 out of 133 in population in the state. It has a density of 36.4 persons per square mile making it 116 out of 133 in the state. Patrick County has 8.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 58 crosses through the county from east to west from Henry County to Carroll County. The county resembles a sled facing west. Stuart is located in the southeast quarter of the county. Stuart is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 8.1% of the county population.
