The Modern red brick and concrete structure was erected in 1996 to replace a classier 1838 courthouse.  It is situated on Court House Avenue at Sycamore Street.  United States Highway 1 passes two blocks to the west of the location.  Bond Comet Westmoreland & Hiner are the combined architects.  A District Circuit Courthouse is also located in the city.  The old courthouse is surrounded by a wrot iron fence.  The city was created on July 10, 1902 from parts of Prince George and Dinwiddie counties as the 107th county equivalent.  Petersburg is named for Fort Henry commander Peter Jones.  Petersburg City is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, William E. Cameron. 

Petersburg City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 7 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Petersburg City and Amelia, Dinwiddie, Nottoway, and Powhatan counties and Forty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Petersburg City and Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, and Hopewell cities.  The city is in the southeast part of Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is north and Virginia Beach, Virginia is east of the city.  The city center is in Petersburg 2.2 miles Southeast of downtown.  The county is surrounded clockwise by the City of Colonial Heights and Prince George, Dinwiddie, and Chesterfield counties. 

The area of the county is 23 square miles.  It is 108 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 55 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1409.57 persons per square mile making it 24 out of 133 in the state.  Petersburg has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 85 originates and heads southwest into Dinwiddie County.  Interstate Highway 95 enters from Colonial Heights City, north, and exits to Prince George County, southeast.  United States Highway 1 comes in from Colonial Heights City and goes into Dinwiddie County.  United States Highway 301 is joined with United States Highway 1 from Colonial Heights City, splits and joins Interstate Highway 95 into Prince George County.  United States Highway 460 comes from Prince George County, east, and joins Interstate Highway 85 into Dinwiddie County.  The city resembles a pig facing southwest.  This city is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
