The Poquoson City courts shares the 1997 facility with York County. It is located on Ballard and Church Street in Yorktown. United States Highway 17 is one block to the west of the location. HLM Design and Caro, Monroe & Lang combined on the Modern Colonial Revival red brick courthouse. City Hall has the City Council is a light tan brick building. It is located off of Virginia State Highway 171. Poquoson City was established on January 1, 1975 from York County as the 133rd and final county/county equivalent. The city name is Native American for “great marsh.”

The city is in the southeast part of the state. Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is west of the city. The city center is in Poquoson 1.1 miles Northwest of downtown. The city is surrounded clockwise by Gloucester and Northampton counties, and the City of Hampton, and York County.
