The Modern red/brown brick and concrete 1990 courthouse replaced an 1884 facility. It is sited on Court Drive at Laurel Spring Road. Virginia State Highway 106 is one block to the east of the site. Hening-Vest-Coving Architectural provided the designs of the columned building. An Administration Building was added in 2004. Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House. Some counties maintain this in their official name. Prince George County was organized on January 1, 1703 from Charles City County as the 20th county. Chappall’s Creek (1702), Bailey’s Creek (1714) and Prince George (1784) have all served as the county seat. The county and its county seat are named for Prince George, husband of Queen Anne.
Prince George County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors. Two Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Prince George, Brunswick, Greensville, Surry, and Sussex counties and Emporia and Hopewell cities and Forty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Prince George, Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg cities. The county is in the southeast part of the state. The James River forms its northern border. Richmond, Virginia is northwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is east of the county. The county center is 5.4 miles Southeast of Prince George nearer New Bohemia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Charles City, Surry, and Sussex counties and Petersburg and Colonial Heights cities and Chesterfield County and the City of Hopewell.
The area of the county is 282 square miles. It is 78 out of 133 in the state. It ranks 47 out of 133 in population in the state. It has a density of 126.68 persons per square mile making it 57 out of 133 in the state. Interstate Highway 95 enters the county from the northwest, City of Petersburg, and exits to the southwest, Sussex County. Interstate Highway 295 comes from City of Hopewell, northwest, and terminates. United States Highway 301 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Petersburg City to Sussex County. United States Highway 460 comes from Sussex County, southeast, and goes northwest into Petersburg City. The county resembles a battleship sailing southwest. The City of Prince George is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Fort Lee is on the northwest border of the county. Prince George is the county seat and Fort Lee is the largest populated area. Prince George is 5.8% of the county population while Fort Lee is 9.5% of the county population. This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
