The 1895 stone Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse was augmented in 1985 with a Judicial Center.  The courthouse is located on Main Street between Washington and Jefferson streets.  United States Highway 11 is Washington Street.  William Chamberlin and Company are the architects.  The courthouse burnt in 1989 and is planned to be rebuilt.  The courthouse features a tower with working clock and rot iron fencing.  There was also an 1839 courthouse in Newbern.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was formed on March 30, 1839 as the 90th county.  The county and county seat are named for American Revolutionary hero Casimir Pulaski. 

Pulaski County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Pulaski, Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, and Wythe counties and Galax and Radford cities and Fifty-three Magistrate Court Judges serve Pulaski, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties and Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford cities.  Pulaski County is in western Virginia.  Roanoke, Virginia is northeast and Charleston, West Virginia is northwest of the county.  The county center is 5.8 miles East of Pulaski nearer Newbern.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Giles and Montgomery counties and the City of Radford and Floyd, Carroll, Wythe, and Bland counties. 

The area of the county is 321 square miles.  It is 63 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 51 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 105.3 persons per square mile making it 67 out of 133 in the state.  Pulaski County has 34.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 81 enters the county from the northeast, Montgomery County, and exits to the southwest, Wythe County.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81 from Montgomery to Wythe counties.  The county looks like a fat small letter r facing northeast.  The City of Pulaski is located in the western third of the county.  Pulaski is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
