The Modern red brick 2007 building replaced the 1877 courthouse.  The facility is on Court Circle at Richmond Road.  Richmond Road is United States Highway 360 in the community.  Wiley and Wilson provided the building designs.  A 1976 District Court and an Annex augment the county courthouse.  The courthouse sits in a complex of government buildings.  There was also a 1692 building in Warsaw, the only county seat.  The county was established on January 1, 1692 as the 18th county.  The county was named for the Duke of Richmond.  It is also the source name for the City of Richmond.  Warsaw is named for Warsaw, Poland. 

Richmond County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Eight Circuit Court Judges and Fifteen District Court Judges serve Richmond, Caroline, Essex, Hanover, King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties and Fredericksburg City and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Richmond, Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is in the eastern part of the state.  Richmond, Virginia is southwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 3.5 miles Southeast of Warsaw nearer Cobham Park.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster, Middlesex, and Essex counties. 

The area of the county is 216 square miles.  It is 89 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 117 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 42.84 persons per square mile making it 105 out of 133 in the state.  Richmond County has 16.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 360 passes east to west in the county from Northumberland County to Essex County.  The county looks like a laser rifle pointing northwest.  Warsaw is located near the center of the county.  Warsaw is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 16.3% of the county population.
