The Modern tan brick structure was completed in 1984 on Broad and Clay streets.  United States Highway 460 passes one block east of the site.  The city was organized on December 31, 1967 from Roanoke County as the 129th county equivalent.  The city is named for Salem, New Jersey.  It is also the source name for the county seat of Roanoke County. 

Salem County government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 4 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Seven District Court Judges serve Salem City and Roanoke County and Roanoke City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Salem City and Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities.  The city is in the western part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is directly east and Charleston, West Virginia is northwest of the city.  The city center is in Salem .7 miles West-Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Roanoke County and the City of Roanoke. 

The area of the city is 15 square miles.  It is 112 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 69 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1689.8 persons per square mile making it 23 out of 133 in the state.  Salem has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 81 travels the northern border of the city from northeast to southwest in and out of Roanoke County.  United States Highways 11/460 cross east to west from Roanoke City to Roanoke County.  The city is shaped like a sauce pan pointing toward the northeast.  This city is in the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area.
