The year of construction and the architect for the red brick facility are unknown. It is sited on Beverly Street between Central Avenue and Lewis Avenue. United States Highway 250 passes one block to the east of the site. The city was formed on July 10, 1902 from Augusta County as the 109th county equivalent. The city is named for Rebecca Staunton, wife of Governor William Gooch. She is also the namesake for the county seat of Augusta County.

The city is in western Virginia. Roanoke, Virginia is southwest and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the city. The city center is in Staunton 1.1 miles Northeast of downtown. The city is completely surrounded by Augusta County.

United States Highway 11 travels northeast to southwest through the city in from and out to Augusta County. United States Highway 250 goes southeast to northwest in and out of Augusta County. Woodrow Wilson, the 27th President, was born in this city. The county resembles a dog head facing northeast. The city is pronounced STAN-TON. This city is in the Staunton-Waynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area.
