The Modern 1993 red/brown brick structure serves this independent city.  It is located on Judicial Boulevard at Courthouse Drive.  Virginia State Highway 165 is one block to the northeast.  Williams, Tazewell, and Associates are the architects.  Virginia Beach City was organized on January 1, 1952 from Norfolk County as the 120th county equivalent.  Its name is a geographical term. 

The area of the city is 248 square miles.  It is 80 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 3 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1852.7 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 133 in the state.  Virginia Beach has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 64 clips the western part of the city from Norfolk City, north, to Chesapeake City, south.  Interstate Highway 264 originates in the city and heads west into Norfolk City.  United States Highway 13 enters from Northampton County, north, exits into Norfolk City, west, reenters into the city and exits out into Chesapeake City, southwest.  United States Highway 58 originates and parallels Interstate Highway 264 into Norfolk City.  United States Highway 60 originates and heads northwest into Norfolk City.  The city is shaped like a backward capital letter P. 

Virginia Beach City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 10 Council Members.  Nine Circuit Court Judges and Fourteen District Court Judges serve Virginia Beach City and Accomack and Northampton counties and Forty-four Magistrate Court Judges serve Virginia Beach City and Accomack and Northampton counties and Norfolk, and Portsmouth cities.  Virginia Beach city is in the southeast corner of the state on the border with North Carolina.  The Chesapeake Bay is its northern border and the Atlantic Ocean is its eastern border.  Richmond, Virginia is northwest and Baltimore, Maryland is north of the city.  The city center is in Virginia Beach 8.7 miles Southwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Northampton County and the Atlantic Ocean and North Carolina and Chesapeake and Norfolk cities.  This city is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
