The Modern red brick courthouse was built in 2000 and is on Monticello Avenue off of Ironbound Road.  Virginia State Highway 199 is one block to the west of the courthouse.  Jorge L. Hernandez and Francis Lyn are the architects.  Williamsburg uses the James City courthouse for court matters.  The City Hall houses the City Council.  It is on Lafayette Avenue.  Williamsburg was organized on July 10, 1902 from James City County as the 110th county equivalent.  The city is named for King William III.  He is also the namesake of King William County and its county seat and for the county seat of James City County.  Williamsburg City is the birthplace to 5 Virginia Governors, Edmund J. Randolph, Peyton Randolph, Wilson C. Nicholas, Littleton W. Tazewell, and William H. Mann. 

Williamsburg City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 4 Council Members.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Williamsburg City and Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson City and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Williamsburg City and Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, and Richmond cities.  The city is located in southeast Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is northwest and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the city.  The city center is in Williamsburg .9 miles North of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise York and James City counties. 

The area of the city is 8 square miles.  It is 126 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 100 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1758.50 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 133 in the state.  Williamsburg has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  United States Highway 60 passes through the city from southeast to northwest in from and out to James City County.  The city is shaped like a fat rocking chair.  This city is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
