The Modern tan brick facility was erected in 1999 to replace the 1902 courthouse.  It is sited at the intersection of 4th and Jefferson streets.  United States Highway 11 is four blocks to the northwest of the site.  J. A. Gibson and Associates are the designers of the courthouse.  The 1902 structure still provided county offices and a 1974 District Courthouse also supports.  The old courthouse has columns and a tower.  A military gun sits on the grounds.  There was also an 1818 courthouse in Wytheville.  Wythe County was established on December 14, 1790 from Montgomery County as the 69th county with Wytheville as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Signer of the Declaration of Independence George Wythe.  Wythe County is the birthplace to 2 Virginia Governors, Henry C. Stuart and Elbert L. Trinkle. 

Wythe County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Six Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties and Galax and Radford cities and Fifty-three Magistrate Court Judges serve Wythe, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise counties and Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford cities.  The county is in the western part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is northeast and Charleston, West Virginia is northwest of the county.  The county center is in Wytheville .9 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bland, Pulaski, Carroll, Grayson, and Smyth counties. 

The area of the county is 463 square miles.  It is 34 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 61 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 61.1 persons per square mile making it 94 out of 133 in the state.  Wythe County has 34.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 77 passes north to south through the county from Bland County to Carroll County.  Interstate Highway 81 goes east to west from Pulaski County to Smyth County.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81 from Pulaski to Smyth counties.  United States Highway 21 originates and heads south into Grayson County.  United States Highway 52 parallels Interstate Highway 77 from Bland to Carroll counties.  The county looks like the State of Oregon tilting southwest.  Wytheville is located near the center of the county.  Wytheville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 29.2% of the county population.
