The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 1997. There were also 1697, 1733, 1840, 1876 and 1955 courthouses in Yorktown. The courthouse is on Ballard Street at Church Street. York County was an original county (6th county) founded on January 1, 1634 with Yorktown as the only county seat. The county and county seat are named for York, England. York County is in the southeast part of Virginia. Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is northwest of the county. The county center is 6.5 miles Southwest of Yorktown nearer Seaford. The county is surrounded clockwise by King and Queen and Gloucester counties and Poquoson and Newport News cities and James City County and the City of Williamsburg. This county is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
