The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 1997.  There were also 1697, 1733, 1840, 1876 and 1955 courthouses in Yorktown.  The courthouse is on Ballard Street at Church Street.  United States Highway 17 passes one block to the west of the location.  HLM Design and Caro, Monroe & Liang combined on the designs.  York County was an original county (6th county) founded on January 1, 1634 with Yorktown as the only county seat.  The county and county seat are named for York, England.  York County is the birthplace to 2 Virginia Governors, Thomas Nelson, Jr., and John Tyler, Sr. 

The area of the county is 216 square miles.  It is 91 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 29 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 303.07 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 133 in the state.  York County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there aren’t any incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 64 comes in the county from the southeast, James City County, and goes to the northwest, New Kent County.  United States Highway 17 enters from the north, Gloucester County and exits to the south, Newport News City.  The county is a backward diagonal.  Yorktown is located in the East quarter of the county.  Bethel Manor is in the extreme southeast corner of the county.  Yorktown is 0.3% of the county population while Bethel Manor is 5.8% of the county population. 

York County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve York, Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, and New Kent counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Forty-four Magistrate Court Judges serve York, Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  York County is in the southeast part of Virginia.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is northwest of the county.  The county center is 6.5 miles Southwest of Yorktown nearer Seaford.  The county is surrounded clockwise by King and Queen and Gloucester counties and Poquoson and Newport News cities and James City County and the City of Williamsburg.  This county is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
