The 1915 dark red brick Classical Revival courthouse is still used.  A modern steel and glass Addition was constructed in 1980.  The facility is at the intersection at 4th and Lincoln streets.  United States Highway 101 is one block to the west.  Francis Grant designed the courthouse.  There was an 1892 version of the courthouse previously.  The county was organized on April 26, 1854 from Jefferson County as the 16th county.  New Dungeness was the first county seat until 1890 when Port Angeles took over.  Clallam County gets its name from the Native American word meaning “strong people.”  The county seat was named by its discoverer “Port of Our Lady of the Angels.” 

Clallam County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Superior Court Judge and Two District Court Judges serve Clallam County.  The county is located in the northwest corner of Washington on the border with Canada and the Pacific Ocean.  Seattle, Washington is southeast and Vancouver, Canada is northeast of the county.  The county center is 31.3 miles West of Port Angeles nearer Crescent.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and San Juan and Jefferson counties and the Pacific Ocean. 

The area of the county is 1738 square miles.  It is 20 out of 39 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 39 in population in the state.  It has a density of 44.4 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 39 in the state.  Clallam County has 40.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 101 enters the county from the east, Jefferson County, and exits to the southwest, Jefferson County.  The county resembles a sled.  Port Angeles is located on the northeast border of the county.  Port Angeles is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 25.9% of the county population.  The county is pronounced KLAL-LAM.  This county is in the Port Angeles Micropolitan Statistical Area.
