The concrete and glass Modern facility was built in 2001 to replace a masonry 1948 building which continues as the Administration Building. The facility is on Center Street at 6th Street. Washington State Highway 20 is five blocks south of the site. Bryan G. Young provided the designs. A 1973 Annex also supports the courthouse. Ebby’s Landing was the first county seat. Coveland had an 1855 courthouse and Coupeville also had an 1890 courthouse. The county was organized on December 22, 1852 from Thurston County as the 5th county. The county is named for the islands which make it up. Coupeville was named for settler Thomas Coupe.
Island County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a clerk, a treasurer, an auditor, and an assessor (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Two Superior Court Judges and One District Court Judge serve Island County (judicial.) The county is in the western part of the state in the bay. Seattle, Washington is southeast and Vancouver, Canada is north of the county. The county center is 5.9 miles Southeast of Coupeville nearer Keystone. The county is surrounded clockwise by Skagit, Snohomish, Kitsap, Jefferson, and San Juan counties.
The area of the county is 209 square miles. It is 38 out of 39 in the state. It ranks 15 out of 39 in population in the state. It has a density of 415.5 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 39 in the state. Island County has 31.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county looks like two worms. Coupeville is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Oak Harbor is on the northwest border of the county. Coupeville is the county seat and Oak Harbor is the largest city. Coupeville is 2.2% of the county population with Oak Harbor is 28.3% of the county population. This county is in the Oak Harbor Micropolitan Statistical Area.
