The masonry Classical Revival courthouse was constructed in 1916. The courthouse is on Main Street at 5th Avenue. United States Highway 12 is three blocks to the east. Henry Osterman & Subert are the architects. It has faux columns on the front. An Administration Building was added in 2008 and a District Courthouse also supports the county. There was an 1881 courthouse previously. The county was founded on April 25, 1854 from Skamania County as the 15th county with Walla Walla as the only county seat. Walla Walla County and its county seat are named for the Native American tribe.

The county is on the southeast border with Oregon. The Snake River is its northern border and the Columbia River is its western border. Spokane, Washington is northeast and Seattle, Washington is northwest of the county. The county center is 15.2 miles Northwest of Walla Walla nearer Lowden. The county is surrounded clockwise by Franklin and Columbia counties and Oregon and Benton County.

It has a density of 45.25 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 39 in the state. Walla Walla County has 71.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 12 enters the county from the east, Columbia County, and exits to the northwest, Franklin County. United States Highway 730 originates and heads south into Oregon. The county is shaped like a clown’s hat. The City of Walla Walla is located in the southeast quarter of the county. Walla Walla is the county seat and the largest city. It is 54.0% of the county population. This county is in the Walla Walla Micropolitan Statistical Area.
