The Modern red/tan brick 1955 facility replaced a classier 1889 version. The facility is at the intersection of Main and Island streets. Main Street is United States Highway 195 in the town. Whitehouse, Price, Deneff and Deeble are the architects. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. Whitman County was created on November 29, 1871 from Stevens County as the 22nd county and Colfax has always been the county seat. It is named for Missionary Marcus Whitman. The county seat was named for United States Vice President Schuyler Colfax. Whitman County is the birthplace of 1 Washington Governor, Michael E. Lowry.
Whitman County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a clerk, a treasurer, an auditor, and an assessor (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Three Superior Court Judges serve Whitman and Walla Walla counties and One District Court Judge serves Whitman County (judicial.) Whitman County is on the southeast border with Idaho. The Snake River is the southern border of the county. Spokane, Washington is north and Seattle, Washington is northwest of the county. The county center is 6.3 miles West of Colfax nearer Mockonema. The county is surrounded clockwise by Spokane County and Idaho and Asotin, Garfield, Columbia, Franklin, Adams, and Lincoln counties.

United States Highway 195 travels north to south from Spokane County to Idaho. The county looks like a running pair of pants. Colfax is located in the eastern third of the county. Pullman is in the southeast quarter of the county. Colfax is the county seat and Pullman is the largest city. Colfax is 6.3% of the county population while Pullman is 66.6% of the county population. This county is in the Pullman Micropolitan Statistical Area.
