The red brick Colonial courthouse was erected in 1837 and remodeled and enlarged in 1937 and 1963.  It is at Court and Randolph streets.  United States Highway 219 is one block to the east of the building.  John W. Dunn is the architect.  It features columns and is under renovation in 2024.  The grounds have veteran memorials.  The county was established on October 20, 1778 as the 5th county with Lewisburg as the only county seat.  Greenbrier County is named for Greenbrier River.  The county seat is named for settler Andrew Lewis.  Greenbrier County is the birthplace of 2 West Virginia Governors, Henry M. Mathews and Homer A. Holt. 

Greenbrier County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges serve Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties and One Family Court Judge and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Greenbrier and Monroe counties.  Greenbrier County is in the southeast on the border with Virginia.  Charleston, West Virginia is northwest and Roanoke, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The county center is 16.3 miles North-Northwest of Lewisburg nearer Williamsburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Webster and Pocahontas counties and Virginia and Monroe, Summers, Fayette, and Nicholas counties.  Greenbrier County resembles a teapot.  Lewisburg is located in the southern quarter of the county.  Lewisburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 11.9% of the county population. 

The area of the county is 1021 square miles.  It is 2 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 32.3 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 55 in the state.  Greenbrier County has 33.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 64 enters the county from the east, Virginia, and exits to the west, Raleigh County.  United States Highway 60 comes from Virginia and goes to Fayette County, northwest.  United States Highway 219 goes northeast to southwest from Pocahontas County to Monroe County.
