The concrete and marble Modern building was erected in 1964.  The courthouse is at Stratton and Hudgins streets.  West Virginia State Highway 10 is two blocks to the south of the site.  Robert L. Brown is the architect.  There were 1904 and 1911 versions previously in Logan, the only county seat.  The county was founded on January 12, 1824 from parts of Giles and Tazewell counties, Virginia, and Cabell and Kanawha counties, West Virginia as the 23rd county.  The county and county seat are named for a Native American chief.  Logan County is the birthplace of 1 West Virginia Governor, Earl R. Tomblin. 

Logan County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, Two Family Court Judges and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Logan County.  Logan County is located in the southwest part of the state.  Charleston, West Virginia is northeast and Cincinnati, Ohio is northwest of the county.  The county center is 4.3 miles Southeast of Logan nearer McConnell.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lincoln, Boone, Wyoming, and Mingo counties.  Logan County looks like a bird on a perch leaning toward the northwest.  The City of Logan is located in the western third of the county.  Logan is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 4.4% of the county population. 

The area of the county is 454 square miles.  It is 22 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 17 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 71.7 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 55 in the state.  Logan County has 12.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 19 enters the county from the northeast, Boone County, and exits to the west, Mingo County.
