The Modern courthouse was built in 2010 to replace the 1908 courthouse which burnt down.  There was also an 1844 courthouse in Berkley Springs, the only county seat.  The structure is on Fairfax Street at Greene Street.  United States Highway 522 is two blocks west of the site.  Siling Associates are the courthouse architects.  Morgan County was founded on February 9, 1820 from Hampshire and Berkeley counties as the 21^st county.  The county is named for American Revolutionary General Daniel Morgan.  The county seat was named for local springs when the county was part of Berkeley County. 

Morgan County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Five Circuit Court Judges serve Morgan, Berkeley, and Jefferson counties and Two Family Court Judges and Two Magistrate Court Judges serve Morgan, Hampshire, and Mineral counties.  Morgan County is on the northeast panhandle border with Maryland.  Charleston, West Virginia is southwest and Baltimore, Maryland is east of the county.  The county center is 7.8 miles South-Southwest of Berkeley Springs nearer Stotlers Crossroads.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Maryland and Berkeley County and Virginia and Hampshire County.  The county is shaped like a fat letter V. 

The area of the county is 229 square miles.  It is 49 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 33 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 74.5 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 55 in the state.  Morgan County has 6.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 522 passes north to south through the county from Maryland to Virginia.  Berkeley Springs is located on the northern border of the county.  Berkeley Springs is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 4.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Hagerstown-Martinsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
