The tan/red brick Neo-Classical Revival building was erected in 1854 and rebuilt in 1922.  The remodeling/rebuild of 1922 changed the original look completely.  Holmboe and Pogue were the original architects.  It features columns and a tower.  It is under renovation in 2024.  Tyler County was organized on December 6, 1814 from Ohio County as the 17th county.  It is named for John Tyler, father of future United States President John Tyler.  The county seat was a geographical term for its location midway on the Middle Island Creek.  Sistersville was the first county seat until 1815 when Middlebourne assumed the role.  Tyler County is the birthplace of 1 West Virginia Governor, Cecil H. Underwood.  The courthouse is at the intersection of Main Street and Court Avenue.  West Virginia State Highway 18 is Main Street in the town. 

Tyler County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One Family Court Judge and Two Magistrate Court Judges serve Tyler, Marshall, and Wetzel counties.  The county is on the northwest border with Ohio.  Charleston, West Virginia is south and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is northeast of the county.  The county center is 1.2 miles East of Middlebourne.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wetzel, Doddridge, Ritchie, and Pleasants counties and Ohio. 

The area of the county is 258 square miles.  It is 47 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 32.2 persons per square mile making it 39 out of 55 in the state.  Tyler County has 36.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county resembles a knight chess piece.  Middlebourne is located near the center of the county.  Sistersville is on the northwest border of the county.  Middlebourne is the county seat and Sistersville is the largest city.  Middlebourne is 8.6% of the county population while Sistersville is 17.0% of the county population.
