The tan stone Neo-Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1916. The courthouse is at the intersection of Main and Bank streets. West Virginia State Highway 10 is one block to the east of the site. A. F. Wysong provided the designs. An Annex supports the courthouse. The courthouse is on a hill and features a tower and columns. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. The county was organized on January 26, 1850 from Logan County as the 42nd county. Oceana was the first county seat until 1907 when Pineville assumed the position. Wyoming County’s name is Native American for “large plains.” The county seat was named for the local pine forests.
Wyoming County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. One Circuit Court Judge serves Wyoming County and Three Family Court Judges and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Wyoming, Raleigh, and Summers counties. The county is located in the southern part of the state. Charleston, West Virginia is northwest and Roanoke, Virginia is east of the county. The county center is 3.9 miles North of Pineville nearer Rock View. The county is surrounded clockwise by Boone, Raleigh, Mercer, McDowell, Mingo, and Logan counties.
The area of the county is 501 square miles. It is 17 out of 55 in the state. It ranks 30 out of 55 in population in the state. It has a density of 42.7 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 55 in the state. Wyoming County has 16.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 52 clips the southwest corner of the county from Mingo County, northwest, to McDowell County, south. The county resembles a pile of leaves tipped to the northwest. Pineville is in the southern half of the county. Mullens is in the eastern quarter of the county. Pineville is the county seat and Mullens is the largest city. Pineville is 3.0% of the county population while Mullens is 6.9% of the county population.
