The tan rock and brick Art Deco courthouse was built in 1931. It is located on Grand Avenue, 5th Street, Ivinson Avenue, and 6th Street. Grand Avenue is United States Highway 30 in this part of the town. Wilber H. Hitchcock and William Dubois are the building architects. There was also an 1871 version of the courthouse also in Laramie, the only county seat. Albany County was created on December 16, 1868 as the 3rd county. The county is named for Albany, New York. The county seat was named for French trapper Jacques LaRamie. He is also the namesake for Laramie County.
Albany County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. Two District Court Judges and One Circuit Court Judge serve Albany and Carbon counties. The county is located on the southeast border with Colorado. Cheyenne, Wyoming is east and Casper, Wyoming is northwest of the county. The county center is 16.8 miles North-Northwest of Laramie nearer Bosler. The county is surrounded clockwise by Converse, Platte, and Laramie counties and Colorado and Carbon and Natrona counties.

Interstate Highway 80 crosses through the county from east to west from Laramie County to Carbon County. United States Highway 30 is joined with Interstate Highway 80 from Laramie County, splits and continues west into Carbon County. United States Highway 287 is joined with United States Highway 30 from Carbon County, northwest, splits and goes south into Colorado. The county looks like a capital letter J with a notch out of its top. Laramie is located in the southern quarter of the county. Laramie is the county seat and the largest city. It is 84.7% of the county population. This county is in the Laramie Micropolitan Statistical Area.
