The Modern brown brick facility was erected in 1971. The courthouse is on Gillette Avenue at 5th Street. United States Highway 14 passes three blocks to the north of the site. Henry Therkildsen was the building architect. The building was enlarged in 2005. The county was established on February 21, 1911 from parts of Weston and Crook counties as the 15th county. Gillette has always been the county seat. The county is named for Territorial Governor John Allen Campbell. Gillette was named for surveyor Weston Gillette.

The county is located on the northeast border with Montana. Casper, Wyoming is south and Billings, Montana is northwest of the county. The county center is 5 miles Southeast of Gillette nearer Sleepy Hollow. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Crook, Weston, Converse, Johnson, and Sheridan counties.

Interstate Highway 90 passes east to west in the county from Crook County to Johnson County. United States Highways 14/16 are joined with Interstate Highway 90 from Crook County, splits and continues northwest into Sheridan County. The county is a rectangle. Gillette is located slightly west of center in the county. Gillette is the county seat and the largest city. It is 71.1% of the county population. This county is in the Gillette Micropolitan Statistical Area.
