The Modern tan brick and concrete structure was erected in 1967. The structure is on Cleveland Street at 3rd Street. Cleveland Street is United States Highway 14 in this part of the town. The facility was designed by Frederick H. Porter, Jr. There was an 1888 courthouse previously in Sundance, the only county seat. The county was created on December 8, 1875 from parts of Albany and Laramie counties as the 6th county. It is named for General George Crook. Sundance was named for the mountain which is named for the Native American rites conducted there.
Crook County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. Three District Court Judges and Four Circuit Court Judges serve Crook, Campbell, and Weston counties. The county is in the northeast corner of the state. It borders both Montana and South Dakota. Cheyenne, Wyoming is south and Billings, Montana is northwest of the county. The county center is 21.3 miles Northwest of Sundance nearer Carlile Junction. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and South Dakota and Weston and Campbell counties.

It has a density of 2.5 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 23 in the state. Crook County has 38.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 90 passes east to west in the county from South Dakota to Campbell County. United States Highway 14 is joined with Interstate Highway 90 from South Dakota, splits and rejoins Interstate Highway 90 into Campbell County. United States Highway 16 comes from Weston County and joins Interstate Highway 90 into Campbell County. United States Highway 212 cuts the northeast from Montana to South Dakota. The county is a rectangle. Sundance is located in the southeast quarter of the county. Sundance is the county seat and largest city. It is 14.4% of the county population.
