The Modern stone and concrete 1996 building replaced a 1919 courthouse.  It is located on 20th Street at Carey Avenue.  The facility is two blocks southwest of United States Highway 85.  Noel Griffith & Associates designed the new courthouse.  The old Courthouse continues to provide administrative space.  There was also an 1873 courthouse.  The county was created on January 9, 1867 as an original county.  Fort Sanders was the first county seat followed by Cheyenne in 1868.  The county is named for French trapper Jacques LaRamie.  He is also the namesake for the county seat of Albany County.  Cheyenne was named for the Native American tribe.  Laramie County is the birthplace of 1 Wyoming Governor, Robert D. Carey. 

Laramie County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Three District Court Judges and Three Circuit Court Judges serve Laramie County.  The county is located in the southeast corner of the state on the border with both Colorado and Nebraska.  Casper, Wyoming is northwest and Denver, Colorado is south of the county.  The county center is 14.2 miles North of Cheyenne.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Goshen County and Nebraska and Colorado and Albany and Platte counties. 

The area of the county is 2686 square miles.  It is 15 out of 23 in the state.  It ranks 1 out of 23 in population in the state.  It has a density of 37.4 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 23 in the state.  Laramie County has 66.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 25 crosses through the county from Platte County, north, to Colorado, south.  Interstate Highway 80 passes east to west from Nebraska to Albany County.  United States Highway 30 is joined with Interstate Highway 80 from Nebraska to Albany County.  United States Highway 85 comes from Goshen County, northeast, and goes into Colorado, south.  United States Highway 87 is joined with Interstate Highway 25 from Platte County to Colorado.  The Wyoming state capitol is located in this county.  The county is a rectangle with the northeast corner cut away.  Cheyenne is located near the southern border of the county.  Cheyenne is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 64.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Cheyenne Metropolitan Statistical Area.
