The tan brick and rock Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1912. It is sited on Sheridan Avenue between 10th and 11th streets. United States Highway 14 is Sheridan Avenue in the town. Link & Haire are the architects. The building was enlarged in 1983 and restored in 1985. The courthouse features a tower and a painted bison in front. A satellite courthouse supports the county courthouse. Park County was organized on February 15, 1909 from Big Horn County as the 14th county with Cody as the only county seat. The county is named for Yellowstone National Park. The county seat was named for founder Buffalo Bill Cody.
Park County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners. One District Court Judge and Three Circuit Court Judges serve Park, Big Horn, Hot Springs, and Washakie counties. The county is located in the northwest corner of the state on the border with both Idaho and Montana. Casper, Wyoming is southeast and Billings, Montana is northeast of the county. The Continental Divide is the western border of the county. The county center is 13.4 miles Northwest of Cody. The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Big Horn, Washakie, Hot Springs, Fremont, and Teton counties.

It has a density of 4.3 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 23 in the state. Park County has 56.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highways 14/16 enter the county from the east, Big Horn County, and terminate. United States Highway 14 Alternate comes from Big Horn County and terminates. United States Highways 20 crosses east to west from Big Horn County to Idaho. United States Highway 89 passes north to south from Montana to Teton County. United States Highways 191/287 enter from Idaho and exit into Teton County. United States Highway 212 comes from Montana and terminates. The county is shaped like the State of Oklahoma. Cody is located in the eastern quarter of the county. Cody is the county seat and the largest city. It is 33.9% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced KOE-DEE.
